![]() ![]() The cartridge then converts the vibrations into electrical impulses, which are amplified (either by a separate amplifier or by the turntable’s built-in preamp) and sent to your speakers. When the stylus is put on a spinning record, it rides along the grooves of the record, gathering up and relaying vibrations to the tonearm and cartridge. It’s the link between the record player and the record itself without it, a turntable is nothing more than a spinning platter. I think that I'll be going with the BD.The stylus, often known as the needle, is an important part of any turntable. (I can only compare cheapo and BD on my Shure M95/97, but it should be similar) 20 Euros/Dollars here, so not serious by means of absolute amount)Īs said, the "good" cheapos are nice, but not as good as a BD should be. The fourtysomething Euros/Dollars are well spent, I think.Ī very cheap stylus from a known source may also be good enough, but the difference in price is not that serious. (I had very good trackers with my cheapos, but by far not all) My experience with the BDs is, that they sound much better than cheapos.ĭetail is much better, treble is much better, tracking is often better. The width of the soundstage, one of the great things on the V15III, stays about the same.ĭetails are less fine, tracking by far not as good, but soundwise really acceptable. ![]() (less deep soundstage, but the V15III in my system has a slightly "too deep" one.) The "good" cheapos are louder than the original and have a "more forward" soundstage. With the Black Diamond, I think, the Shure will be slightly different than with the original stylus.Īftermarket styli have bigger magnets and thus are a bit louder. The V15III was the top cart from Shure for some time, it still is a very good one. If you loved the V15III, you may probably not love it. The AT-VM95 (E or higher) may be a great cartridge for the money, but a V15III is something else. Unfortunately, a lot of the styli are out of my price range. I think it might be Swiss made, I'm about to get a new Swiss conical to compare. That thing simply sounds amazing, tracking well at 2 grams. I want to believe in these styli.Īs aftermarket styli for Shure carts go, I've tried a few different ones for my M75's (don't have a V15), with the best ones being: A) a Jico bonded hyper elliptical, which tracks well at 1 gram like an original Shure would and sounds as good, and B) an unknown bonded conical that came with an M75 on a turntable I bought. Since they're affordable, you might aswell try one! Would be great if you reported your experience of it in this thread. I've had some bad experiences with Black Diamonds but so many others swear by them, particularly for Shure carts. The one you have right now is most likely of Japanese origin, considering the "special tracking" label on the stylus guard that's typically found on Japanese made V15 substitutes. The Bliss stylus is, as Jens says, most likely bonded. It looks like that I'll probably go with the Black Diamond. I just retired and a lot of these styli are out of my price range ($100 Max). Thank you for that information and opinion. There are lots of other styli, HE (bonded) and so, but their price is relatively high. The price was 20 Euros (plus shipping), which makes the Black Diamond a more reasonable way to go. The "bad ones" (seem older stock) are not good, though. I also have noname (Stylus Company) styli, of which the "good ones" are really acceptable. That is really good, but nowadays the "new" SAS is way too expensive. What I have for the V15III, is the first version of the Jico SAS. (which very likely is bonded, otherwise thy´d stated nude) Unknown styli always are a risk, so I´d not buy the Japanese one. I don´t have the Black Diamond for my V15III, but for the M97. Does that make a difference in sound?Īnother option, that I was thinking of was getting an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E Dual Moving Magnet Turntable Cartridge/Stylus for $69 Shipped from Amazon and a new TK24 sled.Īny opinions on these or recommendations on something else would be appreciated. The Bliss stylus doesn't specify if it's Nude Elliptical, just says Elliptical, so it might be Bonded. I was thinking about replacing the stylus and was looking at these two. I gently centered it, and the left channel was back. I removed the sled from the tone arm and noticed that the cantilever was shifted to one side. It sounded good, to my ear, but last week the left channel went dead. It has a Shure V15 III-DU cartridge with a "Special Tracking" (?) stylus. I have a Dual 604 TT, which I bought and repaired last year. ![]()
